The reconstruction of Széchenyi Square is probably the most discussed project of the European Capital of Culture season. The reconstruction of the square conducted along with the wall-to-wall renovation of the connecting streets, including Hunyadi János Street leading to the north, Szepesy Ignác Street and Irgalmasok Street going towards the south, is done along the plans of the s73 Studio after several design alterations. New, modern street furniture and natural stone pavement will decorate the square; the traditional elements, i.e. the Statue of the Holy Trinity, the Hunyadi memorial and the eternal flame in front of the mosque, will remain at their original location as requested by the public. The natural stone pavement and the new plants will accentuate the Mediterranean character of the square. Water surfaces and fountains on several points of the square are a new feature.
