The Margaret Island (Margitsziget) is one of the most important public parks of the city. Formerly it served as a hunting area for the kings of the Middle Ages, hence its old name: Island of Rabbits. The small preserve maintains these old traditions. During the reconstruction works of the 21st century most of the old, outdated buildings were destroyed in order to give place to new, provisional-looking, Japanese-style pavilions. Inspired by the park environment, the new buildings resemble wood-stacks, the outside coverings made of sliced tree-trunks - enabling good ventilation for the building with the benefit of being aesthetic and practical at the same time. The designer group is also working for the Budapest Zoo that owns the preserve on Margitsziget.
